Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large group of enveloped positive-sense RNA viruses. Envelope protein plays acentral role in virus morphogenesis and assembly. It acts as a viroporin and self-assembles in hostmembranes forming pentameric protein-lipid pores that allow ion transport. It also plays a role in theinduction of apoptosis, activates the host NLRP3 inflammasome, leading to IL-1beta overproduction.
